OHYC Opens Racing Season for 2017

The Oak Harbor Yacht Club Sail Fleet opened its racing season with the Mardi Gras Sail and Snap Saturday, Feb. 25.
Shannon Buys of Oak Harbor won in Vertigo, while Dave Steckman in Renaissance and Chad Holcomb in Yeah Dawgg tied for second.
It was “not quite a race,” race director Larry Munns said. “We were just out there to have a great day on the water and to encourage new sailors to join our group and share our love for racing and camaraderie.”
Points were awarded for nontraditional accomplishments, such as each boat’s position at the start, new person crew and skipper status, pictures snapped and shared on social media, OHYC membership and participation, as well as the position at the finish.
Oak Harbor Yacht Club Sail Fleet is open to the public and for sailors of all skill levels; Yacht Club membership is encouraged but not required.
“All are welcome, whether you’re an experienced racer or you just want to learn to be a better sailor by rounding the buoys with us,” fleet spokesman Bill Walker said.
Races are held each Thursday evening until early October.
